Endgame Course vs Endgame Guide: Video Hours vs a Quick Reference

Short answer: Buy an endgame course if you want an expert to explain why endings work. Buy a guide plus drills if you want a quick reference and lots of repetition. The Endgame Expertise Bundle (£12.97, $17, one payment) is the second kind: 3 printable guides and 2,700+ puzzles. Its limit: no video and no coaching.

Most club players have lost or drawn an ending they should have won. The question is what to buy to stop it, and the two obvious shapes are very different. One is hours of video from a strong player. The other is a short reference you can flick through, plus a big pile of positions to solve. Here is how to tell which one fits you, including the cases where it is not ours.

What is the real difference between an endgame course and an endgame guide?

A course teaches by explanation, and a guide teaches by reference and repetition. In a course, someone talks you through typical endings and the thinking behind each plan. In a guide, each page holds one idea you can look up in seconds, and the learning happens when you test yourself on it afterwards.

Neither is better in general. Explanation helps most when you do not yet understand why a position is drawn or won. Reference and drills help most when you roughly know the idea but cannot recall it under pressure. Many players need a bit of both, and that is fine.

How do the options compare?

Option Price Payment model Works offline What you get Best for Main limit
Endgame video course Varies, often a one-off fee One payment or subscription Sometimes via download Hours of expert explanation Players who learn by watching and listening Watching is not the same as practicing
Endgame book Low to moderate One payment Yes Deep written explanation Patient readers who like depth Some are far too heavy for a club player
Free sites and articles Free None Usually not Famous positions, tablebase lookups, free lessons Self-directed players No order, so basics get skipped
Endgame Expertise Bundle £12.97 ($17) One-time download Yes, once downloaded 3 printable A4 guides, 2,700+ puzzles in PDF and PGN, solutions document Beginners and club players who fail to convert good positions Not a full course, no video, no coaching

Which one do you need? Try the five-game conversion check

You can answer this for free before buying anything. Open your last five games where an ending went wrong, whether you drew a win or lost a draw. For each, write one line on what actually happened, then sort the lines into three piles.

Pile one is "I did not know the idea", such as not knowing how to make a passed pawn count. Pile two is "I knew it but could not find it in time", such as missing a mating pattern you have seen before. Pile three is "I rushed", which no product fixes, only a slower habit.

If pile one is biggest, you want explanation, so a course or a good book will help more. If pile two is biggest, you want repetition, so guides and drills are the better buy. If pile three wins, spend nothing and slow down. Our free piece on the opposition in king and pawn endgames is a good first fix for pile one.

Mostly missing things you half-knew?

The Endgame Expertise Bundle is one payment of £12.97 ($17): 3 printable guides and 2,700+ puzzles as PDFs and PGN files. It has no video and does not promise a rating gain.

When does an endgame course win?

A course wins when you do not yet see why an ending is won or drawn. A teacher can show how a typical ending grows out of a normal game and talk through the plan at each stage, which a page of notes cannot do. It also suits you if you simply enjoy learning by watching.

The catch is passivity. It is easy to finish a long course feeling ready and then freeze in a real rook ending. If you buy a course, treat the videos as the lesson and add your own active practice straight after each one.

When does a guide plus drills win?

A guide plus drills wins when you need to remember, not discover. The Endgame Expertise Bundle gives you three guides: Endgame Overview and Techniques, Pawn Advancement and Passed Pawns, and Checkmate Patterns. Each page covers one piece, technique, or pattern, so you can read it as a lesson the first time and use it as a flashcard after that.

The puzzles come in six sets sorted by piece: 1,052 pawn, 1,017 rook, 320 queen, 108 bishop, 108 knight, and 101 zugzwang. Every puzzle comes as a PDF and as PGN files, and a solutions document is included. According to the live page, the files work offline once downloaded, and the guides are designed in A4 so you can print them.

Are free resources enough?

For organised players, yes. Free sites cover the famous positions, and tablebase tools tell you whether a position is won, drawn, or lost. If you enjoy hunting for material and you already practice most weeks, you may not need to pay for anything.

What free resources rarely give you is an order. Write yourself a short one: mating patterns first, then king and pawn endings, then rook endings. Our list of endgame puzzles to try gives you something to solve today, and our guide to endgame books covers the reading route in more depth.

Who is the Endgame Expertise Bundle not for?

It is not for you if you want someone to talk you through each ending on video, because there are no videos. It is not for you if you want deep theory, since the page covers basics, pawns, and checkmate patterns rather than every endgame. There is no coaching either, so nobody will explain a position when you get stuck.

It is also a weaker fit if free resources already keep you practicing every week. The PGN files need chess software that reads PGN, and the page recommends ChessX, which is free. The PDFs need no software. The page also says that because these are digital downloads, refunds are not typically offered, so read it before you buy.

How should you use either one so it sticks?

Commit to an answer before you look at the solution. That one habit separates drilling from browsing. Ten minutes a day beats one long session a week, because repetition over many days is what makes an ending feel familiar.

When an ending goes wrong in a real game, find the page or lesson that covers it, then solve three or four positions on that theme the same day. For where this fits with the rest of your training, see our guide to the best endgame courses and guides and the endgame training hub.

Questions people ask

Is an endgame course better than an endgame guide?

Neither wins for everyone. A course explains why endings work, which helps if you do not understand the ideas yet. A guide plus drills helps you remember and recall them. Sort your recent mistakes first, then buy the format that matches.

Does the Endgame Expertise Bundle include video lessons?

No. It is three printable A4 guides and 2,700+ puzzles with a solutions document. There are no videos and no coaching, so it suits players who prefer reference pages and practice to watching lessons.

What do I need to open the puzzle files?

The PDFs open on any device with no extra software. The PGN files need chess software that reads PGN. The live page recommends ChessX, which is free, and the files can be loaded individually or in batches.

Can I print the endgame guides?

Yes. The live page says the guides are designed in A4 with printing in mind, one idea per page, and that you can laminate them if you like. You can also keep them on a screen.

Is the Endgame Expertise Bundle a subscription?

No. It is a one-time payment of £12.97 ($17) for a download you keep, so there is nothing to renew. The live page notes that refunds are not typically offered for digital downloads.

Will endgame training raise my rating?

No product can promise that, and this one does not. Better endgame technique can help you convert positions you already reach, but results also depend on your openings, tactics, and how carefully you play each game.
