You’re a good coach. So why are you building homework on a Sunday night?

The lesson goes well. Your student is sharp, engaged, and getting it. Then they leave, and for the next six days, nothing happens.

Next week they sit down and you ask how the puzzles went. “I didn’t get to them.”

So you spend the first fifteen minutes of a paid hour re-teaching what they’ve already forgotten. You’re not sure whether to be annoyed at them, or at yourself for not giving them something better to do.

You didn’t become a coach to spend your evenings hunting for puzzles.

Sound familiar?

  • You scramble for homework the night before, or skip it altogether
  • You hand every student the same worksheets because there’s no time to do more
  • Students turn up having done nothing, so the lesson starts from scratch
  • Parents ask “what should they practice?” and you make something up on the spot
  • You’d take on more students, but the prep won’t scale
  • You know your best students would improve twice as fast with structure between lessons

Your lesson is one hour. The other 167 hours decide whether they improve.

It isn’t your teaching.
It’s the gap between lessons.

Here’s how homework usually goes.

You point a student at a puzzle site and tell them to do ten a day. They do the easy ones, skip the hard ones, and by next week it’s a blur of unrelated tactics. No theme. No order. No sense of building anything.

Or you make worksheets by hand. They’re good, and they eat your evenings. Every new student means more prep.

Or you do nothing between lessons and hope the student practices on their own. Some do. Most don’t.

All three share one flaw. Nothing builds. A student can’t learn to spot a fork by seeing one fork a week. They need to meet it in a hundred different positions, in order, until they see it before they’ve thought about it.

Memory research has said the same thing for decades: students remember what they practice recalling, not what they’re shown.

Practice that asks for the answer beats practice that hands it over.

Source: Roediger and Karpicke, Test-enhanced learning, 2006

So the problem was never your coaching. Structured practice between lessons takes time most coaches don’t have, so it never gets built.

So what are your options?

If you want students practicing properly between lessons, you’ve got five choices. You’ve probably tried most of them.

Build it yourself

Total control, and hours of unpaid work every week. Most coaches run out of Sundays before they run out of students.

Free puzzle sites

Great puzzles, zero structure. No theme, no order, no way to see whether it stuck, and plenty of other things on the screen to pull a young student away.

Per-student platforms

Polished, but the bill grows with every student you add, and each student needs an account.

Books and worksheets

Fine for a lesson or two. Not a year, and not tailored to the theme you’re teaching this month.

Hope for the best

The default. Students improve slowly, or drift away because they don’t feel themselves getting better.

What’s been missing is homework that’s structured like a curriculum, costs like a single purchase, and takes you no time to set.

Why pay when puzzles are free?

Fair question. Free puzzles give students problems to solve. The Coach Edition gives them a plan, in order, and gives you nothing to prepare. Here’s the comparison.

12 months. One theme at a time. Difficulty that rises as your students do.

The quickest way to make a tactic stick is to meet it again and again, in different positions, until spotting it is automatic.

That’s what each month does. One theme. 25 puzzles a day for 30 days. Early days are gentle so students build confidence, and the puzzles get harder as the month goes on.

By the end of the year, your students have seen 9,000 puzzles across 12 core tactics, plus a bonus month of checkmates.

How it works for you

Three steps, no prep

01

Assign the month

Each month is one folder with one theme. Send it to your students by email, a shared drive, or a USB stick. That’s your homework set for the next 30 days.

02

They practice daily

25 puzzles a day in the interactive app, or on printable pages if you prefer paper. The app tracks what they’ve finished.

03

Teach from the theme

Next lesson, you already know what they’ve been seeing. Ask about the puzzle that beat them, and spend the hour teaching, not re-teaching.

12 months. 9,750 puzzles. Zero prep.

Meet Chess Tactics Mastery: Coach Edition

A complete year of tactics homework you can give to every student, with an interactive app for screens and a printable for every tactic and puzzle.

Inside a month

Here’s what Month 1 (Forks) looks like

Every month follows the same pattern, so once your students have done one, they know how to do them all.

A puzzle in the Chess Tactics Mastery app

The app

Students see a position, find the move, and get instant feedback. Hints are there when they’re stuck, and the app keeps track of what they’ve completed.

A printable puzzle page from Chess Tactics Mastery

The printables

A PDF for each tactic and each puzzle, for students who learn better on paper, or for when you want screens off. Solutions are included.

The progress screen in Chess Tactics Mastery

The progress screen

Completion stats and streaks show how far through the month a student is. A quick screenshot is all you need to see they’ve done the work.

Day 1 starts with the clearest forks, the kind a student can spot after a minute of looking. Over the month, the positions get more crowded, the forks get quieter, and the right move stops announcing itself.

By Day 30, your student is finding forks hidden behind other moves, and they’ve seen the pattern hundreds of times. Then you hand them Month 2.

What’s inside

Unlimited students

One payment

No subscription and no per-student fees.

No logins

Students open the app and start. Nothing to set up on their side.

Screens optional

Every tactic and puzzle has a printable version.

What it would take to build this yourself

You could make all of this. Plenty of coaches have started. Here’s what it involves:

  • Finding 9,750 puzzles that fit 12 different tactical themes, plus a bonus
  • Sorting every month from easy to hard, so students aren’t thrown in at the deep end
  • Checking every solution
  • Laying out a printable page for each tactic and puzzle
  • Building a way for students to track what they’ve done
  • Writing it all up in a format you can hand to a student

Even if you spent only 30 seconds on each puzzle, 9,750 puzzles is over 80 hours. That’s before you’ve taught a single lesson.

Or you can send Month 1 tonight, and spend the saved time on the students who pay you.

Built for coaches who’d rather teach than prepare

This is for you if

  • You coach chess, one-to-one or in groups
  • Your students are beginners-to-intermediates who already know how the pieces move
  • You want students practicing between lessons without you chasing them
  • You’d rather pay once than per student

It probably isn’t if

  • You want a live dashboard showing every student’s results
  • Your students are still learning how the pieces move
  • You want lesson plans and teaching notes (that’s the Learning Library, below)
  • You expect it to work without students practicing. It helps the ones who do

Why I built this

I’m not a chess coach, and I won’t pretend I can teach your students better than you can.

What I’m good at is systems. And the thing about improving at chess is that it happens in the hours between lessons, not during them. Those hours need structure, and structure takes time to build, which is exactly what working coaches don’t have.

So I built the structure. A year of tactics, one theme at a time, in an order that makes sense, with an app and printables so students can work however they like.

I made it for players first. The Coach Edition is the same system with the right to share it with everyone you teach, because it shouldn’t cost you more every time you take on a student.

You do the teaching. I’ll do the homework.

Questions, answered

Can I try it first?
Yes. Email me at info@chesscheatsheets.com and I’ll send you a month to look at.
Who can I share it with?
Every student you teach, whether that’s one-to-one or in a group. You can send them the files, print the PDFs, and use the app in lessons. What you can’t do is resell it, post it publicly, or give it to other coaches. They’ll need their own copy.
Is there a limit on how many students I can give it to?
No. It’s one payment, and it covers every student you teach.
What exactly am I buying?
12 monthly training systems plus a bonus Checkmates month. Each has an interactive app, PDF printables for every tactic and puzzle, solutions, and PGN files. You also get the Book Moves opening cheat sheets as a PDF bonus. It isn’t a video course or a lesson plan, and it doesn’t include coaching.
How do my students use it?
Each month comes as a folder. You send it to a student, they unzip it, and double-click one file to open the app in their web browser. Instructions are included, and you don’t need an internet connection once it’s downloaded. Or they can skip the app and work from the printable PDFs.
Do my students need accounts or logins?
No. There’s nothing to sign up for. The app saves each student’s progress privately in the browser on their own device.
Can I see my students’ progress?
Not remotely. Progress is saved on the student’s own device, so there’s no coach dashboard. The easy way to check is to ask for a screenshot of the progress screen, or to collect the printable pages.
What level is it for?
It’s built for beginner and intermediate players, and advanced players can use it too. Each month climbs from easier to harder puzzles, so it works across a range of students. It isn’t for students who are still learning how the pieces move.
What device do students need?
Any computer with a modern web browser. For students without one, the printable PDFs work on paper.
Do I have to teach in the order of the months?
No. The order is designed to build through the year, but every month works on its own. If a student needs Pins next, send Pins.
Can I put my own name and logo on it?
Yes. The Co-Branded Coach Edition adds your name and logo to the app and every printable. You can add it to your order above, and you’ll also get the chance to add it straight after checkout. Want the Book Moves cheat sheets with your branding too? Email me after you buy and I’ll quote you.
What’s in the Learning Library pre-order?
Five modules (Foundations, Material and Defense, Tactics, Positional Foundations, and Endgames) with around 30 lesson packs. Each pack has a main guide, a coach handbook, and a printable homework pack. You get access to everything as it’s finished, and the price rises from £47 ($63) to £97 ($130) when it’s done. If it’s never released, you’ll get a full refund.
Is it a subscription?
No. You pay £97 ($130) once and it’s yours for life.
How do I get it?
You get instant access to the download on the order confirmation screen. You’ll also get an email with a link you can use at any time.
What if I get stuck?
Email James at info@chesscheatsheets.com and he’ll help you get going.

Two ways your next lesson can go

One

Your student arrives. You ask about the puzzles. They shrug. You spend the first fifteen minutes going back over last week, and Sunday night is spent hunting for something to set them.

Two

Your student arrives having practiced 25 puzzles a day on the same theme. You ask about the one that beat them, and spend the whole hour teaching. Next month’s homework went out in thirty seconds.

The difference between those two lessons is one purchase.

Every week without structure between lessons is another week of the same shrug. A full year of homework is ready now, and sending the first month takes about as long as writing the email.

Get the Coach Edition for £97 ($130)
  • 12 months plus a bonus month
  • Unlimited students
  • Works offline, no logins
  • Month-by-month guarantee

P.S. It’s £97 ($130), once. That’s about £8 ($11) a month for a year of homework, however many students you teach. And if a month doesn’t work for your students, you get £8 ($11) back for it.

How much a student improves depends on how much they practice. This is a training tool and does not promise a rating gain.
